Character: Yami no Yuugi/Atem/Maboroshi (see version notes)
Series: Yuugiou
Version: Okay, this might be long. He's anime canon, from the point of directly before the Memory World arc. He's also brought from not only one game (A Yuugiou-only game that closed years ago) but two, the second being my own RP which ended very quickly. He has about a year of additional rp-related experience that has nothing to do with the actual series canon. Because he's an amnesiac, he ended up having to come up with a name during the original RP; he's called Maboroshi. His true name is Atem, and he knows this, but doesn't use it.
Age: He's seventeen physically, however he's actually a bit over three-thousand years old. He wasn't 'active' for that time, though, so he doesn't really have that much experience.
Gender: Male
Appearance: Standing about five feet tall and weighing only just over ninety pounds, Maboroshi is small and somewhat slender and delicate looking. His presence and aura, however, do tend to make him look taller than he is; this is illustrated in both the anime and manga, as he seems to be taller than Yuugi despite them actually being the same height.
His hair is very unusual, standing mostly straight up in a star shape (the creator, Kazuki Takahashi, has stated in interviews that Yuugi and Atem’s hair was based on the shape of a hand.) The main color is black, though the tips are red and his bangs are gold; though most of his bangs hang down or stick out a bit to the sides, a few stand up with the rest of his hair, creating lightning bolt shapes.
His eyes are violet, though they may tend toward reddish or indigo depending on the episode or lighting (In the manga, they’ve changed colors depending on the cover; they seem to be violet or reddish-purple canonically, though they’ve been other colors including green.) Very large, they’re also sharp and intense, and he has dark eyelashes that make it look like he’s wearing Egyptian kohl. He looks young and has a slightly rounded face, though his cheekbones are sharp and defined.
His voice is pleasant when he's talking, but it can quickly get very loud and booming, and is easily recognizable and distinctive (this holds for both dub and original, though I usually go with the original voice; his distinctive voice is mentioned specifically more than once in the anime and the manga.) He usually wears blue, white, and black. When very into something, like a duel, his movements tend to get dramatic and theatrical, though otherwise he is usually very reserved with gestures and motions.
Personality: Maboroshi is, at most times, a set of contrasts and contradictions. He is confident but easily discouraged, protective but hostile, cold but kind, lonely but independent. He is not always the most stable of people, though for all intents and purposes he manages to do 'sane' well enough.
His temper and tendency to react to most situations with anger cause the largest problems for him and everyone else. He is very quick to anger and once he gets mad, he takes quite some time to cool down. In that time, he tends to make stupid decisions, and he can be quite harsh even towards those he's not actually angry with. He can and does get violent at times, though he tends to use magic rather than become physical.
He is extremely protective of people he considers his friends or those in need of his help. The people he cares most about he can be ridiculously overprotective of, to the point of killing people who he considers a threat to them. Protecting other people is Maboroshi s main motivation for the vast majority of the fighting he does; when he thinks he has lost everyone, he usually gives up. On the other hand, if there is even one person left for him to fight for, he'll do so until he absolutely can't any longer.
Maboroshi is very brave; it's extremely difficult to frighten or intimidate him. He doesn't panic, and is able to keep very focused and level-headed in a dangerous situation. He is easily annoyed by anyone displaying what he sees as cowardice, as it is a trait he greatly dislikes in people. He reacts over-the-top to any insinuation that he is lacking in bravery, and it is generally a touchy subject.
Maboroshi is quite intelligent, though he doesn't always use that intelligence, especially in social situations. In fact, he can be a bit insensitive and cold without meaning to, and is intentionally quite sarcastic at times. He has a liking for arguments and debates, and frequently engages in them for no reason other than his own entertainment. He is a very quick learner, able to master games the first time he plays them, and has even defeated the creator of a game at their own game with no prior knowledge of how to play. Combined with this talent is his ability to quickly figure out and predict an opponent's strategy based on their personality; Maboroshi rarely loses, usually because he can account for an opponent's moves and tailor his to defeat them.
Though he is, for all intents and purposes, very confident in himself, he is also easily discouraged. If he for any reason thinks he can't do whatever it is he needs to be doing, or if he believes the situation is hopeless, he may well freeze or just entirely give up. Similarly, feeling helpless, unable to fix or protect something/someone, or being entirely lost as to what to do in an important situation can all immediately send him into a (usually short-lived) depression.
He is a somewhat paranoid person; used to almost everyone being an enemy, he's quick to suspect people and slow to make friends. His confidence has been damaged due to some events in the game he came from, and he's not always entirely sure of himself. Despite that, he won't back down if it's something worth fighting for.
Fears: Very brave and unlikely to panic in any situation, Maboroshi tends to react to most frightening situations with anger rather than feat. Failing his friends, or losing any of them, is his greatest fear; he is used to being the one to protect everyone, and there is always a part of him that is terrified he will do something wrong and something terrible will happen to someone he cares about. Not only is he concerned for the people he knows and loves, but he often feels the pressure to protect the entire world, as that task has fallen on him more than once before.
Less seriously, he’s very claustrophobic. Though he can handle being in elevators, closets, cars, etc, he greatly dislikes it and anything smaller or more confined can prompt, if not panic, at least a flare of his temper. He also greatly dislikes to be alone for long, especially somewhere very dark and quiet; though he isn’t afraid of the dark itself, it reminds him of the time he spent in the Puzzle, and is generally upsetting to him.
It’s not quite a fear, but Maboroshi is intensely suspicious of people. The majority of people he meets tend to wish him or his friends harm, and so he is very slow to trust people. He tends to view most as potential threats.
Weaknesses: Maboroshi is not exactly all that good at protecting himself. In his world, things are based around playing card games to settle problems; he's unable to fight himself, and without the Sennen Puzzle (which he didn't carry in the last game) he's pretty much magicless, at least in any way that would protect him. He's small and not a match for anyone or anything that would physically attack him. Maboroshi has no sense of direction, and he gets lost easily; he carried a GPS system with him so he could find his way around. Also, due to some events that occurred while he was in a previous RP, Maboroshi has a few stress-related health issues, namely that he is severly anemic. Usually he doesn't show any symptoms or indications, and it rarely bothers him much. He gets cold easily and he doesn't eat or sleep much, and he's a bit more prone to illness.
Strengths/Abilities: Though he doesn't have the Puzzle, and therefore most of the magic, he does have his own power that he doesn't know about. Mentioned in the last few episodes of the series, it's revealed that his ability to predict cards and draw what he wants when he wants it isn't just luck or faith, but that he's capable of actually changing fate itself. He doesn't know he has this ability, so for all intents and purposes he just seems to be extremely lucky. Maboroshi is also a brilliant strategist and problem-solver, and he's almost always able to plan and come up with ways to get out of whatever gets himself into.
History: Maboroshi is the spirit of a three-thousand year old Pharaoh from ancient Egypt, who died sealing away a great evil. In the process, his soul was trapped in the Sennen Puzzle, and his memory wiped out. When the Puzzle was assembled in modern day Japan by a boy named Yuugi, Maboroshi's soul was released, and he and Yuugi began sharing a body. Together, they begin on a quest to recover Maboroshi's memories, discover the secrets of how Duel Monsters relates to ancient Egypt, and defeat the great evil once and for all so that history is never repeated again.
YGO is exceptionally long, so this section might be slightly ridiculous in length, though I’m going to attempt to condense it.
The first arc of the series is Duelist Kingdom, and it’s sort of an intro to the strangeness of the show and the characters. Basically, an American businessman named Pegasus holds a Duel Monsters tournament (Duel Monsters being an important card game in the YGOverse, created by Pegasus himself), with the best duelists of the world in attendance. He entices Yuugi/Yami no Yuugi to join by taking the soul of his grandfather, and agreeing to release it only if he is defeated at the end of the tournament. The duelists face off against each other, betting star chips in each match, and the first eight duelists to collect ten star chips go on to the finals. In the finals themselves, it is revealed that the entire tournament was set up by Pegasus so he could get his hands on the Sennen Puzzle, which Yuugi/Yami no Yuugi holds, in order to combine it’s magic with the technology of Kaiba corp. In doing so, he hopes to resurrect his dead wife, Cynthia. Pegasus holds a Sennen Item himself, the Sennen Eye, and the Sennen Ring’s location is also revealed during this arc; it’s held by Bakura, a classmate of the main cast, and it is home the malevolent spirit Yami no Bakura.
After a long and annoying tournament arc, Yami no Yuugi/Yuugi face off against Pegasus and win, freeing Yuugi’s grandfather’s soul as well as the Kaiba brothers, who had also been caught up in the entire mess (though for different reasons; Pegasus needed Kaiba’s company so he could have access to the virtual technology.) Pegasus’ motivations are revealed, Yuugi and Yami no Yuugi come to realize they’re two separate people and form a partnership (this happens in slow stages throughout the arc, but really solidifies in the duel against Pegasus and just after), and Yami no Bakura takes Pegasus’ Sennen Eye. Shaadii, an Egyptian man, appears to investigate some of the happenings, and he is shown to be in possession of two more Sennen Items: The Ankh and the Scales. He leaves soon after, though it is also revealed he was the one to introduce Pegasus to Duel Monsters and to give him the Sennen Eye.
A few filler arcs take place between Duelist Kingdom and the next major storyline arc, Battle City, and they’re unnecessary to the main plot. Battle City itself begins with Kaiba going to meet an Egyptian woman, Isis, who holds a Sennen Item of her own: The Tauk (or Torque; the translation is still unclear and fought about.) This Item allows her to glimpse the future, and she is also in possession of one of the three God Cards: Obelisk. After attempting to reveal the past to Kaiba, in which he was a High Priest in ancient Egypt, she makes an agreement with him: She will give him Obelisk temporarily, if he agrees to hold the Battle City tournament in order to draw out a group of card thieves called the Rare Hunters. She believes them to have the remaining two God Cards, and with so many rare cards being in play during the proposed tournament, she expects them to show up. Kaiba agrees to the tournament and adds Obelisk to his deck.
Soon after, Yami no Yuugi and Anzu happen upon the museum, where Isis explains to Yami no Yuugi that he was a Pharaoh in ancient Egypt, and he had sealed away the dark powers of Duel Monsters, which was actually a game played with real monsters for lift or death reasons. She tells him the secret to regaining his memories lies in the tournament; he had to enter, and win. Yami no Yuugi agrees as well.
Battle City starts, playing with the official ‘expert’ rules for Duel Monsters, and also adding an ante rule: The loser of a duel must give up their rarest card to the winner. Kaiba’s tournament is invitational only, but either he’s not paying attention or he purposefully left his security lax, because many people not invited enter the tournament, including Jounouchi and the Rare Hunters, as well as the season’s villain, Malik Ishtar. Malik, the younger brother of Isis, is revealed to be the leader of the Rare Hunters and he is set on revenge against the spirit of the Pharaoh. He also holds a Sennen Item of his own, the Rod, which gives him the power to control peoples’ minds, as well as various other things he rarely uses.
This is another ridiculously long arc, but after many battles Yami no Yuugi wins the second of the God Cards, Osiris, and he and his group of friends reach the semifinals of the tournament. Aside from Yami no Yuugi and Kaiba, Jounouchi, and Mai (a friend from Duelist Kingdom) are half the eight finalists. The other four consist of Isis, Yami no Bakura (who showed up out of the blue and won his place in the semifinals in a single duel), Malik, and Malik’s assistant and adoptive brother, Rishid. Rishid is pretending to be Malik, while Malik calls himself Namu. During the semifinals, Yami no Yuugi defeats Yami no Bakura, Kaiba defeats Isis, and Jounouchi defeats Rishid (and reveals Namu as Malik). At this point, Malik’s secondary personality, Yami no Malik, takes over and becomes the much more sinister and dangerous villain for the remainder of the arc. Yami no Malik defeats Mai, trapping her soul in a penalty game. Malik/Yami no Malik is also revealed as the owner of the third God Card: Ra. Shaadii makes a brief appearance to talk about the power of the God Cards.
They detour from the Battle City arc at this point to have the filler Noa’s Arc, which delves into the Kaibas’ pasts and there’s a lot of strangeness. Like most filler arcs, it’s not essential to the main story.
During the Battle City finals, the series starts really getting into it’s mythology, including revealing more about Yami no Yuugi and Kaiba’s past selves in ancient Egypt. Jounouchi faces Yami no Malik and loses, and Yami no Yuugi wins his duel, as well as Obelisk, in a duel against Kaiba. Yami no Yuugi and Yami no Malik duel for the final match of the tournament, and after Malik manages to regain control of his body, he forfeits and finishes off Yami no Malik. Yami no Yuugi wins, and ends up with all three god cards.
With the three cards collected, and everyone back to ‘normal’ after the tournament, Yami no Yuugi goes to the museum to present the God Cards to the tablet of memory, hoping to regain his own memories in the process. At the same time, an Atlantian named Dartz casts a spell, sealing off the tablet and beginning what is widely considered the strangest arc in the series: Doma. Again, this is a filler arc, and not essential to the plot, though it does a great deal of character development and adds more layers to the YGOverse’s mythology. Eventually though, Dartz is defeated and things return again to relative normal.
There is another filler arc at this point in the form of a mini exhibition tournament hosted by Kaiba, called the Kaiba Corp Grand Prix. This is a purely fanservice arc, and doesn’t take itself seriously at all; it’s almost all comedy, and includes a great deal of ridiculousness. It’s a very light hearted arc to contrast the extremely depressing Doma.
Finally though, that arc is over as well, and the final ones begins. They present the God Cards to the tablet once more, and this time Yami no Yuugi is drawn into the ‘Kioku no Sekai’, or ‘Memory World’, where he is essentially reliving his life in ancient Egypt as Pharaoh. In ancient Egypt, the Duel Monsters is real, and summons can either call monsters from stone tablet or they can summon a creature that represents their soul, called their kaa. Instead of the life points used in Duel Monsters, the summoner uses their baa (which is their soul/life force, essentially) to sustain their creatures; if they take damage to their creatures, they take damage directly to their soul. Enough damage to summoned monsters and the summoner will die; if they lose their kaa, they are also killed.
This arc reveals the history of Duel Monsters, Yami no Yuugi’s life and death, his court and the people who have been reincarnated (such as Kaiba), the Sennen Items and their powers and creation, and Yami no Bakura’s motivations. In short: Yami no Bakura’s village had been sacrificed to create the seven Sennen Items, which are also the key to summoning Zork, the God of Destruction and Darkness. Yami no Yuugi’s friends manage to find his name, Atem, which is the key to combining the three God Cards to create Horiakti, the Goddess of Light, who destroys Zork and puts an end to both the god and Yami no Bakura once and for all.
Now with his memories and name, Yami no Yuugi (or Atem, rather) there is one final things to do. In order for him to move on to the afterlife, he must ‘lay down his sword’, or in other words be defeated by someone who is greater than him in a duel. He and Yuugi face off in the Ceremonial Duel, and Yuugi wins, freeing Atem’s soul to move on to the afterlife. The series ends soon after, with Atem at peace, the Sennen Items lost forever, and Yuugi moving on with his life with his friends and all that they’ve learned.
Maboroshi's canon stops just after the Grand Prix Arc. Upon presenting the God Cards to the tablet that would reveal his memory, things go wrong. Somehow, he (and the other resident spirit, Yami no Bakura) are given their own bodies, and a light appears in the sky. Unable to get the tablet to respond, he slowly begins to adjust to being a normal person and, having no name of his own, he and Yuugi choose the name 'Maboroshi' for him.
Things don't go so well for him in his new life. One of his enemies, Yami no Malik, shows up and begins to cause issues. Maboroshi loses the God Card, Ra, to Yami no Malik, and the evil being also steals the Sennen Rod. Maboroshi begins to have issues in his personal life as his friend's sister, Shizuka, develops a crush on him, which he doesn't reciprocate. Soon after, the past versions of people begin to show up, including Maboroshi's past (and younger) self, Atem. Maboroshi and Atem clash horribly, unable to get along, and Maboroshi is more than a little depressed to find out he was such an annoying person.
Things only get worse as Shizuka and Atem begin a relationship and attempt to have a child, something which weirds Maboroshi out to no end. Having no luck at all convincing them this is a bad idea, not to mention one that bothers him, he fortunately finds himself in another world before anything more can happen. There, he meets various people also trapped in ths city with him, including Yuugi... But he is a different Yuugi, from a different world. The two are understandably awkward together, as they try to get used to knowing an entirely new version of the person that means the most to them. They have a terrible adventure in a cave, and begin to be more comfortable with each other, but they still haven't worked out the strangeness between them yet.
